When many people think of fall, they think of back to school, leaves changing colors and holidays that revolve around tasty foods. They think of school-studying, trick-or-treating, sweater-wearing children. They think of family and feasts and holidays. But you know what we think of? Football!! Out of respect for the fact that the season officially started last Sunday, we thought we’d drop kick some facts your way!

1. The modern football helmet was created by Paul Brown. It consists of a hard plastic top with thick padding on the inside, a facemask made of one or more metal bars, and a chinstrap used to secure the helmet. (Wikipedia)

2. In the mid 1940s, helmets became a requirement in the NFL. (home-team-sports.com)

3. The Bell Sports sister company, Riddell, is the official helmet of the NFL through 2014. (Easton-Bell Sports)

4. The earliest version of the football helmet was called a “head harnesses” and it was made of soft leather and designed to predominately cover the ears. (Popular Mechanics)
