He just wanted me to enjoy the mountains. In summertime, we were mountain biking even before we had real mountain bikes. We were up there on bikes with pedal brakes and Bell helmets on going through the mud in the canyons.

L.G. Bumstead founded the shop in 1909, so long ago that its first phone number was simply 35. His descendents are still operating the store 100 years later (albeit with a longer phone number). An open house on Saturday will mark the occasion.

Newman is an expert on the topic. In fact, he was a member of the design team that produced the first Spalding hockey helmet in the early 1970s, worked in Long Beach, Calif., on the original Bell bicycle helmet in the mid-1970s and most recently assisted Riddell in the development of their new Revolution Speed helmet, which is worn by nine Edmonton Eskimos. Another 16 wear the original Riddell model.
