If your bike spent the fall and winter months’ stored away collecting dust and cobwebs, be sure to give it a thorough inspection and safety tune-up before pedaling. Bell True Fit’s Earth Day Anniversary

Filed in: Bell Sports, Bicycle News, Giveaway, Safety, Survey, back-to-school, bike safety, bike trails, biking, child safety, general biking, helmets

Today is Earth Day 2010 – the 40th Anniversary of the celebration. This week also marks the one-year Anniversary of the Bell True Fit blog! A year ago we started this blog in an effort to raise awareness about Bell’s advances in the bicycling, snow sports and fitness industries, while paying homage to Mother Earth. In doing so, we unveiled our True Fit technology: a perfect combination of science and human experience that resulted in the best fitting helmets ever. We kicked off this blog with a Bell True Fit helmet giveaway and some Earth Day awareness.

Since last April we’ve held numerous giveaways, offered invaluable helmet and biking tips, and covered off on some of the most relevant helmet and biking-related news with our Week In Review series.

Unlike a newspaper, radio or traditional TV sitcom, a blog is not a static thing … it requires human participation and interaction for it to be successful.

You’ve participated in our surveys and contests, you’ve shared your favorite biking trails and locations, and you’ve offered unparalleled insight into the minds of the bicycle community. So, on this anniversary we’d like to thank our community. Meaning, we thank YOU for all the different levels of collaboration offered to us over the past year.

We thank The Full Mommy for her review and giveaway of a Bell True Fit helmet last spring. TG Daily Dads and Grads Product Giveaway was a hit with the guys last summer.  Last fall we conducted a survey asking if you allow your children to ride their bicycle to school. During the winter we asked what your favorite holiday traditions are. Both times we gave a helmet to one lucky commenter. And of course who could forget our twitter contests where we gave away three sets of Tony Hawk RIDE video games and Bell True Fit helmets! We hope the winners @MomMostTraveled, @davesniadak, and @MissingLynxx are getting good use out of the video games and helmets. ;-)

While your participation here has helped our blog become a Web destination for the bicycle community, your engagement with our Facebook and Twitter pages has also made Bell True Fit one of the highest followed in the social web.  ‘Thank You’ to all of you who commented on our blog posts, wrote on our Facebook wall, or “ReTweeted” our Twitter updates. Without you this blog would not be possible. Your engagement helps us decide what kind of content you’re most interested in for yourself and others in your own social networks.

We hope you’ll continue to visit our site and provide the invaluable feedback that you do.

Be on the lookout for more contests, and once again THANK YOU for being a part of the Bell True Fit family!

Happy Earth Day 2010!

Week in Review: Bicycle News & Opinions from Around the World

By Bell Sports on March 25th, 2010 / Add a Comment

Lately the news has been dominated by politics and the passage of health care reform. There is a lot more news out there however, and some interesting news about bicycles (and government). From Taiwan to Mexico, to Washington D.C. and the Eastern Seaboard, cycling is in the headlines … especially in regard to bike lanes.

Mexico City makes way for bicycles (Lisa Schroeder, Christian Science Monitor)
  • March 22, 2010: United States Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood made an announcement on his blog (FastLane.gov) last week that “People across America who value bicycling should have a voice when it comes to transportation planning.” Some disagree. Read the entire article and join in the conversation here: Should Bikes And Cars Be Treated Equally? (Lisa Caruso, NationalJournal.com)
  • March 21, 2010: Although bicycle sales in Taiwan dropped 20 percent to 30 percent in 2009, Chairman of Taiwan Bicycle Exporters’ Association, Yang Ying-ming predicted that bicycles sales will surge in 2010 by 10%. Taiwanese bicycle sales to see more than 10% grown this year (Staff Writer, Taiwan News)

  • March 21, 2010: Should the state of Maryland adopt the “three-foot” rule, like other states have? Simple legislative options that go further than road markings could set Maryland (and the rest of the country) on the path toward being a place where people who want to bicycle can do it when they want; where motorists are not in conflict with bicyclists; and where energy consumption is measured more in miles pedaled than in miles per gallon. Learn more about the three-foot safe-passing distance law here: Give Cyclists Some Room (Gregory T. Simmons, BaltimoreSun.com)
  • March 19, 2010: D.C.’s most famous street, Pennsylvania Ave., may soon get bike lanes right along the median. DDOT plans to roll out the new bike lanes later this spring. DC Plans to Expand Bike Lanes (Beth Parker, MyFoxDC.com)
  • March 19, 2010: Host of the nationally syndicated radio show “Pardon the Interruption” Tony Kornheiser made some remarks about cyclists taking up too much room on the road, and Lance Armstrong leapt to the defense of all two-wheelers! On his twitter page, Armstorng said Kornheiser was “disgusting, ignorant, foolish” (Kyle Koster, SunTimes.com)
  • March 18, 2010: Auto-branded bikes are nothing new, but it seems BMW actually played an active role in designing the two bicycles announced recently. BMW Launches Two New Bicycles Including M Variant (Evan McCausland, AutomobileMag.com)

Did you know? Bell’s Fast Facts Fridays – Oscars

By Bell Sports on March 5th, 2010 / Add a Comment

The 82nd Academy Awards are at 8 ET / 5 PT Sunday, March 7, 2010 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood and the glamour will be in full effect. In honor of this year’s Oscars we’d like to recognize those that we consider superstars by setting positive examples of safety by wearing a helmet! This week’s Fast Facts Friday is a collection of photos from around the web of Oscar-related celebs wearing helmets.

Jake Gyllenhaal is best known for his roles in Donnie Darko, Bubble Boy, The Day After Tomorrow, Jarhead, and Brokeback Mountain (in which he was nominated an Oscar for best actor in 2005). He isn’t nominated for an Academy Award this year, but his older sister Maggie Gyllenhaal is nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her role in Crazy Heart.

We’re not sure if Maggie rides a bike, but Jake sure does. We’re excited to see him staying safe in a Giro helmet when he’s riding the streets.

Matthew Broderick is best known for his role in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. He also starred in the 1999 movie Election which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Writing. These days he keeps his pant leg rolled up so it won’t get caught in the chain, and wears a Bell helmet for safety.

Matt Damon is best known for … ummm, well, he’s been in a TON of popular movies including Good Will Hunting, Saving Private Ryan, Rounders, The Bourne series, The Departed, and 2009’s Invictus. He is actually nominated this year for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his role in Invictus. We’re definitely glad to see he’s staying safe with a Bell Helmet.

Hugh Jackman is known for his role as the slashing, side-burned X-Man Wolverine. He hosted the 81st Academy Awards last year to rave reviews. He isn’t nominated for an Oscar this year, and he’s not hosting the awards show either, but when we found photos of him wearing a helmet while riding his mountain bike we had to share.

Carey Mulligan is nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her role in An Education.

Here she is seen sporting a helmet as she rides on the back of a motorcycle with boyfriend Shia LaBeouf, also protecting his valuable head with a helmet.

How about some “chill” sports to snap you out of your winter fatigue?

By Bell Sports on January 7th, 2010 / Add a Comment
Filed in: Safety, bike safety, general biking, helmets, random facts

With an unwavering cold snap tightening its grip on the nation, even the most dedicated of cyclists, skateboarders, in-line skaters and outdoor extreme sports enthusiasts can become inclined to stay indoors.

Rain, snow, and below freezing temperatures in many areas are threatening crops, causing deadly ice storms and delaying flights. But it’s not all bad in these frosty times – the cold weather is great for all the winter sports enthusiasts out there!

Skiing and snowboarding are two winter sports that get the most attention, but they’re not the only winter activities available for snow-lovers to partake in. There are many other exciting cold weather activities for people of all ages.

The winter months of December, January and February can also mean sledding, ice skating, and snowball fights. And how about winter bicycling?

Winter mountain biking has become an exhilarating way for the avid cyclist to push his or her limits and continue riding throughout the winter months. Biking.com suggests winterizing your bike with bigger tires for better traction in the snow.

Not quite ready to tread through the snow on tires? Snowshoes were thought to have been invented some 4,000 to 6,000 years ago, but only in the past few years have many American schools (mostly, but not exclusively in the Northeast) started offering snowshoe programs in their physical education classes to help combat obesity. Snowshoeing is also a preferred method of hiking to great powder for backcountry skiers and snowboarders. (Wikipedia)

Back in November we detailed The Necessity of Skiing & Snowboarding With a Helmet. Some other winter sports that require or suggest wearing a helmet include speed skating, ski jumping, bobsledding, snowmobiling, ice hockey, and luge.

In coastal areas where the elevation is too low to snow during the winter months, surfing is a big attraction for passionate surfers and spectators alike because of the large waves created by all the storms.

People flock to Half Moon Bay, CA, almost every winter to see daring professional surfers take on 20-50 foot waves at Mavericks – all for the chance to win $150,000! Also in the water, fisherman are in luck during the winter thanks to ice fishing and swimmers with guts can find enjoyment in ice swimming.

Still not satisfied? OK, well we’re officially out of ideas…But if you have one in mind – or if you have a favorite winter sport pastime – please feel free to share! All in all, no matter what hobby you decide to take on this winter, please stay safe and warm!

Biking for a cause

Bike for a Cause

This weekend, the season’s most popular Northern California ride, America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride, will take place in Lake Tahoe.

What’s also special about this event is that this bike ride will largely benefit a great cause: The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, as part of the Team In Training cycling program. Season after season, Team In Training unites thousands of new and experienced cyclists and coaches them through months of training to be race-ready, all while raising funds for blood cancer research, education and patient services. The end result for those participating in this weekend’s event on behalf of Team In Training is not only an epic and scenic 72-mile ride around the lake, but also contributing funds to LLS to be used in its efforts to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

In addition to this weekend’s event in Tahoe, what’s nice to note about most large organized bike rides is that there are many worthy and honorable causes that receive added publicity and funding support from thousands of riders. For those that need some added motivation for biking, consider biking for a greater cause.

Here are a few additional June bike for a cause events around the nation that are also receiving chatter on twitter:

Ride for AIDS Chicago – June 6, benefiting the Test Positive Aware Network to raise funds for HIV/AIDS in the Chicago area.

Tour de Cure in Saratoga Spring, New York – June 7, benefiting the American Diabetes Association. Lots of twitterers are involved.

Healing Wheels Tour in Morristown, Colorado – June 13, benefiting Inner City Health Center, a non-profit clinic providing health services for the un- and under-insured in metro Denver.

Ride for Autism in Lincroft, New Jersey – June 13 benefiting Autism New Jersey, while raising community awareness about autism.

Are you participating in these events? Is there another cause that you are passionate about that we haven’t listed here?

Share in the comments or tweet at us @BellTrueFit and let us know!
