Our third and final round of the Bell True Fit twitter contest is complete! We’ve reached 900 followers on twitter, and as promised the time has come to select a follower (at random) to receive a free Bell True Fit helmet!

With this new milestone, we’re also donating five brand new True Fit helmets to the folks at San Jose Bike Party, to help them continue building a strong bicycle community. Located in Bell Sports’ backyard, the group organizes themed, monthly rides through the city of San Jose, CA and this month The Orange Ride starts at 8pm on Friday, January 21, 2011. Christmas is only a few days away, yet it seems that many still have some last-minute shopping to do (What’s new?). What better time of year than summer to get out on two wheels and get some exercise?

Summer brings out the outdoor adventurer in all of us, especially bicycle riders. There are a host of camps taking place all summer long across the country. While most of them are  dedicated to mountain biking there are some other interesting camps to consider.

The Carpenter/Phinney Bike Camp is the ultimate cycling vacation. Teen Treks is an adventure travel camp for people age 12-18. They offer 1 – 8 week trips in Europe, Canada, and the U.S., where they ride all day and stay at hostels, hotels, and campgrounds overnight. Of course the well known Camp Woodward has been offering extreme sports camps for skiers, snowboarders, skateboarders, BMXers and more for 15+ years.

Participating in a bike camp can be a fun, invigorating, and educational experience for adults, and especially for kids. And to those that like to be outdoors and adventurous, bike camp sure sounds like a lot more fun than a traditional arts and crafts type summer camp. The simple act of enjoying a bicycle cruise on a clear day is a wonderful experience. Sadly, many children never learn to ride a bike and miss out on one of the basic activities that children enjoy.

For children with cerebral palsy, riding a bike can especially be a daunting challenge. Fortunately groups like the United Cerebral Palsy of Orange County are helping more and more children and youth learn how to ride bikes. The Orange County Bike Camp, a joint effort of UCP of Orange County and the Down Syndrome Association of Orange County, is a week-long activity where children and young adults with disabilities can learn to ride a bike independently. With the help of a dedicated team of volunteers, the “campers” start with specialized training bikes that are adjusted as they progress in their balance and control. Eventually, some move on to solo riding on two free wheels!

Bell is a proud supporter of the camp and participated in the event as well, donating 22 Blade helmets, 14 Adrenaline helmets, and 7 Universal XL helmets for the bike campers to use while they learned to ride, and of course the riders got to keep their helmets!

Here’s a testimonial from one mother about the event:

“Bike camp was fabulous.  My daughter Delaney did learn to ride a two wheel bike without training wheels.  She is really proud of herself.  She has challenged family members to ‘a race’ and is saying ‘follow me’ as she leads our bike ride.”

We announced a twitter contest on July 24 in an effort to increase helmet advocacy and raise awareness about bike safety, and the response has been tremendous! We reached our first milestone of 700 followers on July 30, which means we’ve selected one lucky follower, at random, to get a free Bell True Fit helmet!

With this milestone, we’re also donating five brand spankin’ new True Fit helmets to SafeKids USA for them to share in their efforts to keep kids safe.

In last week’s Fast Facts Friday post we featured a handful of cities, organizations, and companies offering free helmets. Helmet awareness and bike safety has grown immensely over the last 20 years and we are thrilled to see so much philanthropy.

Today we’re kicking off a helmet giveaway campaign via twitter. Here’s how it works: Follow @BellTrueFit on twitter and be automatically entered to win a new Bell True Fit bike helmet!

Each time we reach another 100 followers, we’ll randomly select one of our followers to send a new Bell True Fit helmet to! Plus, each time we reach another 100 followers we’ll donate five helmets to an organization that is dedicated to helmet advocacy and bike safety. The bicycle community really is a giving place. As you might have seen on this blog from time to time, we’re pretty fond of giving back to the people who support Bell Sports. And we’re not alone. The fact of the matter is: there are a ton of bike-related online contests and giveaways taking place today and every day. At any given time businesses, media, and bloggers are posting ripe bike and bike helmet giveaways for the picking. A tangy orange DC Fixie bike is up for grabs, and to enter the contest all you have to do is send a picture with your favorite orange thing in the world to info@sneakerfreaker.com. 3) From 11am – 3pm ET on Saturday, June 12 the NYC Department of Transportation is hosting a Bicycle Safety and Helmet Program where they’ll be giving away free bicycle helmets to visitors of all ages (while supplies last). You’ll learn how to properly fit and wear your helmet before receiving one. While the NYC DOT is offering helmet education, there will simultaneously be a kids’ bicycle swap taking place. Presented by Recycle-A-Bicycle, children who have outgrown their bicycles (or have extra gently-used bikes to donate) are invited to bring their bike to Socrates Sculpture Park and swap it in exchange for another gently-used bike. All children’s bikes in working order and without gears are welcome at the event. At approximately 2:45pm, any unclaimed bicycles will be donated on a first-come first serve basis. Check out the event on Facebook. 4) Over at RaisingMy4Sons, they’re reviewing and giving away a Strider Balance bike. Sunday is Mother’s Day and in honor of all the moms out there we’re dedicating this week’s Fast Facts Friday post to these band-aid-toting, snack-providing, TLC-offering mothers!

Here are a few random facts for you all that are all about moms:

1)  Many of the sweaters worn by Mr. Rogers on the popular television show, Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, were actually knitted by his real mother. (Mother’s Day Celebration)

2)  The Bell True Fit helmet was named to Mothering Magazine’s Mother’s Day “Strokes of Genius” wish list for its cool and comfortable fit. (Mothering Magazine)

3)  This Sunday the Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania is hosting its first annual Mother’s Day Bike-a-Thon, benefitting several charities, including the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Shriner’s Children Hospitals and the Susan G. Komen Foundation. (Bleacher Report)

4)  In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed the orders that made Mother’s Day a national holiday. (A Girl’s World)

5) This year, The Huffington Post encourages families to celebrate Mother’s Day by honoring Mother Earth and suggests “instead of getting in the car to go somewhere, take a family bicycle ride in your neighborhood.” (Huffington Post)

And in addition to sharing these random facts around Mother’s Day, we also want to share our wish for you all to have a very happy and safe Mother’s Day, no matter if it’s a bike-a-thon, time to get away and dig into a favorite book or a nice family ride to a favorite breakfast locale!

Mothering Magazine’s list of suggested “asks” for Mother’s Day!

Cyclist extraordinaire Lance Armstrong once said, “Winning is about heart, not just legs. It’s got to be in the right place.” Armstrong’s heart seems to be in the right place, and we can see why he’s considered the United States’ most influential athlete, because he makes an impact on everyone — big and small. Recently, Armstrong stepped into a Colorado classroom as the subject of a show and tell.

It all started when Anders, a child from Armstrong’s Aspen community, placed a letter on his doorstep asking the seven-time Tour de France champion to come to his school as and talk to his class.

Without any hesitation Armstrong agreed to the invitation!

He then braved through the snows of Aspen in late spring …

 With bike safety as the topic, Armstrong enriched the lives of the young students giving them an unforgettable show and tell.

 Lance’s good will and genuine enthusiasm for education, bike safety, and our children’s future is commendable!

We try to make learning about bike safety fun also … we do ride bikes and participate in other action sports because they’re fun, right?

Today is Earth Day 2010 – the 40^th Anniversary of the celebration. This week also marks the one-year Anniversary of the Bell True Fit blog! A year ago we started this blog in an effort to raise awareness about Bell’s advances in the bicycling, snow sports and fitness industries, while paying homage to Mother Earth. In doing so, we unveiled our True Fit technology: a perfect combination of science and human experience that resulted in the best fitting helmets ever. We kicked off this blog with a Bell True Fit helmet giveaway and some Earth Day awareness.

Since last April we’ve held numerous giveaways, offered invaluable helmet and biking tips, and covered off on some of the most relevant helmet and biking-related news with our Week In Review series.

Unlike a newspaper, radio or traditional TV sitcom, a blog is not a static thing … it requires human participation and interaction for it to be successful.

You’ve participated in our surveys and contests, you’ve shared your favorite biking trails and locations, and you’ve offered unparalleled insight into the minds of the bicycle community. So, on this anniversary we’d like to thank our community. Meaning, we thank YOU for all the different levels of collaboration offered to us over the past year.

We thank The Full Mommy for her review and giveaway of a Bell True Fit helmet last spring. TG Daily Dads and Grads Product Giveaway was a hit with the guys last summer.  Last fall we conducted a survey asking if you allow your children to ride their bicycle to school. During the winter we asked what your favorite holiday traditions are. Both times we gave a helmet to one lucky commenter. And of course who could forget our twitter contests where we gave away three sets of Tony Hawk RIDE video games and Bell True Fit helmets! We hope the winners @MomMostTraveled, @davesniadak, and @MissingLynxx are getting good use out of the video games and helmets.
